A Trojan Horse on Ice Skates in the War on Starbucks

August 7, 2007 · 3 Comments

I have moved from Niagara on the Lake to Toronto, with modern conveniences like internet access in our hotel room. I just wanted to let everyone know that I have a new passion in life, and it goes by the name of Tim Hortons.

46th Legislative District, meet your new savior:

For those of you who don’t know, Tim Hortons is a famous doughnut shop up here in Canada. To put it in perspective, there are more Tim Hortons than McDonalds nationwide, and they control over 60% of the coffee market compared to Starbucks, which has less than 10%. That very statistic is the reason I think it’s time to start bringing Tim Hortons to southwestern Pennsylvania; they may be our only hope in the losing battle our society is fighting with Starbucks.

I personally am not a big coffee drinker, but I just can’t stand the fact that every time you turn around, a Starbucks is popping up with ridiculously high prices and virtually no organized competition. We need someone to stand up and make it an honest fight, and who better to do that than our neighbor to the north that no one is expecting? Tim Hortons is a Trojan Horse on ice skates.

As if you needed any more motivation, I learned today at the Hockey Hall of Fame that Tim Horton actually played for the Pittsburgh Penguins way back in the day. So we have the local connection going for us, which is nice.

Right now there are a handful of Tim Hortons in the great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, all of them in Erie. As my buddy and Erie native Frank Stoosh would no doubt assert, this further cements Erie’s cultural superiority. It’s time they shared the wealth with the rest of the state, eh?

I don’t want to go into details now, but you haven’t heard the last of my plans to bring a Tim Hortons into the 46th Legislative District…

Who’s website is this? I don’t want to think that i’m sending something to a Horton unless the letter is going to a Horton member.

It all depends where you are in Canada. Vancouver is very much a Starbucks town but Tim Horton’s is definitely a growing presence. People like the affordable coffee and reliable menu. Be forewarned, however, the doughnuts are not actually fresh. They are made at central warehouse bakeries in Ontario. They are then frozen and shipped to locations across the country. Once they arrive at the stores they just heat them up in the oven. Bleh!
